Details:
In many machines a carriage is mounted on top to accommodate correct positioning of the registers in relation to the input register. The Facit works the other way around and moves the input register alongside the register unit which has a fixed position. The result is a very compact mechanism mounted inside. Unusual is the use of an alternating current motor in stead of the more usual universal motor. Also fairly new is the double isolation. It doesn’t need a grounded power cord.
The algorithm used in division differs from the usual restoring approach. In the restoring approach an immediate correction is applied when the divident becomes negative. The CA2-16 uses the nonrestoring approach. Per output digit it saves one reverse movement of the input rotor.
In 1974, Büromaschinen Lexikon still mentiones the Facit 1007 similar to the CA2-16 but with a plastic cover. However it doesn’t mention it’s price anymore. It was catalogued as: “Price on request”. By this time electronic machines with memory were smaller, faster and much cheaper than the 1007. They must have been hard to sell.
The photo mid-under shows two repair notes, one mentions the removal of grease, the other the replacement of a machine part.
The photo right-under shows the replica of the user manual. It was printed from a .pdf file.
Usage:
Addition/subtraction:
Enter a number, then push the “+” or “-” key. At the end of the process both clear the Reg - I input register.
Multiplication:
Enter the 1st number, push “X”, enter the 2nd number, push “X=”
Square:
Enter the number to be squared, then push “X=”
Division:
Enter the 1st number, push the “:”, then enter the 2nd number and push the “:=” button.
